Head Lice Home Remedies

As you surf the web, you will find many, many personal testimonials about struggling with head lice. There are numerous blogs, where people discuss and commiserate on the topic of head lice

Here are a few quotes straight off just one blog where people give home advice about Lice:

"I have battled head lice with my five year old off and on for the past two years. Here's what I learned: DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY ON RID OR OVIDE."
posted by Mary in July '08

"…douse your head with WHITE VINEGAR for TWO HOURS. This dissolves the glue that causes the nits to attach to the hair shaft. It makes combing out sooooo much easier. It smells awful though, but if you can stand it you will soon be lice free. Rinse the vinegar out with shampoo….
….*TRY THIS METHOD BEFORE YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY ON PRICEY RID, NIX OR OVIDE."
posted by Amber, somewhere in the USA

"We bought the expensive stuff first and now we wished we hadn't wasted our money."
posted by Anje K. on April 15 '08

"I found out later that commercial lice treatments actually harden the cement that binds the nit to the hair shaft."
posted by Molly in March '08

"After using NIX three times, and Mayonnaise twice…"

The facts are, these chemical lice shampoos really are not working! LICENDERS products work! LICENDERS uses NATURAL LICE TREATMENT. No chemicals! The lice die from the lice shampoo, the essential oils repel the lice, the combing solution loosens the glue, and the lice comb catches every single nit.

Treating the Toys When Your Child Has Head Lice

headlice November 7th, 2007

During a Lice infestation, most toys do not present a problem at all. Only toys on which a child has likely laid his head are a concern. The main guilty parties are stuffed animals. As we have said previously, lice do not burrow into furry toys by nature. The only concern is a surviving louse that may have strayed off the child’s head directly on to the toy or a stray hair stuck to the toy with a viable nit on it. This only applies to a louse that has had the opportunity to feed on a human head within the past 24 – 48 hours, or a nit that has grown for a few days while on the head, and is likely to hatch soon.

Stuffed toys can often be put into the dryer on high heat. Such toys should be put into the dryer for ½ hour. If the toys have delicate parts, or cannot withstand high heat for any other reason, they should be placed into large garbage type bags, and sealed for 48 hours.

Additional items to pay attention to are headphones from play stations or personal music gadgets, bicycle and sports helmets, and any other toy that is used on your child’s head.  Seal the bags securely with a knot or a tight twist-tie.  As we have explained, in our professional experience treating thousands of families with head lice, 48 hours is a sufficient amount of time to assure that there will be no re-infestation resulting from the toys and protective headgear.

The Right Method – A True Lice Removal Story (conclusion)

headlice August 15th, 2007

Last week we began telling a heartwarming story about a client who was treated with the Licenders head lice removal method by one of our dedicated clinicians. The client, Rachel* had been completely overwhelmed. Everything changed once Licenders came in, and left Rachel* with the manageable step-by-step solution for removing the lice. The amazing story didn't end there - the experience actually changed Rachel's life!

Here is the conclusion of this true-life story:

During the lice treatment, our sensitive clinician picked up on some disturbing information. Rachel* was a single parent, without means of support. Her ex-husband had finally paid for our services, when he realized that the kids were coming to spend time with him, and they were coming with a lice infestation!

Rachel* was so appreciative of our services, and it was obvious that she felt that her inability to fix the problem was due to her inferiority. Our clinician explained to Rachel* that being overwhelmed by a lice situation is a very common experience, in no way related to a person's capabilities. She showed Rachel* that with the proper information and tools, she too could get control of the lice and nits problem that had plagued her home for months. Over the next two weeks, we kept in touch with Rachel*, as we do with all our clients. We confirmed that she was doing the maintenance as advised and that after a few days had found no more live bugs or nits in the process. We did a follow-up appointment within the first week, and were satisfied that Rachel* was doing a great job with maintaining the head lice treatment, to prevent re-infestation . She just needed to be shown the method, and provided with effective tools.

Rachel's self esteem improved so, she seemed like a new person.  And then, our clinician, experienced and caring as she is, made a suggestion to us. Since Rachel* had done such an excellent job, perhaps we could help her even more. Perhaps we could train Rachel* to work for LICENDERS, thus further enabling her to achieve an independent lifestyle. And that is what happened! Rachel* trained with us, learning all there is to know about head lice treatment and became an expert in lice removal herself! Knowing what it's like to feel overwhelmed and ineffective, Rachel* is now on the giving end. Providing clients with the right lice shampoo, an effective lice comb, and the lice removal method that works, she is able to give parents who are dealing with headlice a sense of control and mastery. Rachel* gets much satisfaction knowing she is helping to prevent the interpersonal stress that can develop between parents and children when removal of lice and nits deteriorates into a losing battle.

Hair Lice Symptoms - Are You Infested? | Part 1

headlice February 23rd, 2007

Because of how small hair lice are and how few of them there are to start, it can be difficult to determine whether you or your children have hair lice.  There are a number of symptoms that can help you decipher whether or not you have head lice.  The more you are aware of the symptoms, the quicker you can get to treating the lice if you do in fact have lice.

One of the first symptoms that are apparent with hair lice is constant itching and scratching of the head.  The itching is due to an allergic reaction to the bites from the nits and lice.  If you notice that you or your children are scratching their head more often than usual, you want to look closely for lice.

You can diagnose hair lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for lice, nymphs or nits.  It is difficult to find nits because there are so few of them and they move quickly through the hair.  However, if you find any nits or lice ¼ inches away from the scalp, then it is a confirmation that the person has head lice.  If you have difficulty coming to a conclusion, make sure you see a health care provider to be exact.

Can Head Lice Medication Cure Infestation? Part 2

Continued from the last post: Can Head Lice Medication Cure Infestation? Part 1

Another reason why many head lice medications don’t work is because they can’t penetrate the lice eggs.  Sometimes the medication is effective in killing the crawling bugs, but not effective at killing the nits the bugs left behind. It is extremely difficult for head lice medication to penetrate the nit shell, which makes follow-up treatments vital.

There is also the possibility of your child being exposed again.  You can become infested more than once with head lice, making it crucial that you use follow-up treatments to kill all of the bugs and nits. You must determine what is bringing the lice into the house in order to have an effective cure!  It is common for children to be cleaned only to get re-infested when playing with other kids. It is crucial for parents to inform each other when their child has been exposed to head lice.

Many people tend to over medicate thinking that if they leave the shampoo on longer the prescribed it will be more effective. Not following the directions can lead to scalp irritation which will only make it harder to comb out the nits later.

Can Head Lice Medication Cure Infestation? Part 1

Many head lice medications are ineffective!  However in some circumstances, it’s just 1 step of the procedure you are not doing correctly which stands in the way of total lice removal.

Over time lice develop resistance to head lice medications. At LICENDERS we are constantly in the lab tweaking our products so that they remain effective against lice. If you shampoo and are still finding live bugs, the lice shampoo you are using is not effective! If some of the bugs are dead but some are still active, odds are you didn’t follow the directions properly. Get the Licenders all natural lice shampoo which is guaranteed to work 100% of the time.

Aside from the louse developing a resistance, there are a number of things that can hinder your progress in getting rid of head lice. The most common problem is not following the directions correctly.  Remember that after shampooing it is still essential to comb out ALL the nits. Even 1 nit left behind will mature into a bug and can re-infest its host.  Frequently people are lulled into a false sense of security when after shampooing they no longer see live bugs. Without proper maintenance and continued nit combing it’s only a matter of time before a missed bug or nit manifests itself into another full blown infestation. This is why parents often feel helpless when they try to get rid of head lice by themselves. Licenders offers house call visits in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. 1-888-LICENDERS

Is Head Lice A Danger To Your Child’s Life? | Conclusion

headlice January 5th, 2007

Continued from Is Head Lice A Danger To Your Child's Life

Small lice are known as nymphs and they stay as nymphs for about 7 days.  Lice feed on the scalp every 4 hours and generally it only takes a nymph 7 days to become a full-sized adult. (The size of a sesame seed). The problem with lice is that it takes a continued effort to get rid of them.

Lice easily spread from one child to another due to the social behavior of children. While sharing hats and brushes head lice are often passed back and forth even after one child has been totally cleaned out. That is why it is important to let LICENDERS come clean out the whole school, or playgroup at once.

The best thing to do is to be patient with your child and stick to a program of natural head lice removal. If your child still has head lice after 2 weeks of treatment, talk to your child's friends' parents.  There may be several kids in the class that have lice, which is making it difficult to get rid of them.

Head lice is an annoying but common problem that is difficult to get rid of.  It is in your favor to catch the lice at an early stage before it develops into a full blown infestation.
