As a concerned parent it’s in your best interest to know what a head louse is. The odds are pretty good that sooner or later your kids will be exposed to head lice either in camp, a playgroup, or in school. Head lice are tiny wingless parasitic insects that live off human hair. Head lice is very common among children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old. The head louse feeds off small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp.
Head lice are more of a nuisance than a threat to kids. While they don’t spread disease, continuous scratching may lead to infection. It is important to be aware of the symptoms because lice are highly contagious.
Head lice are small, but are visible to the naked eye. Nits are the lice eggs. Before they hatch, they appear as little yellowish brown dots. Lice generally lay nits on hair shafts close to the scalp because it is warmer there. After being laid, nits take between 1 to 2 weeks to hatch.
