The odds are pretty good that sooner or later your kids will be exposed to head lice either in camp, a playgroup, or in school. Head lice are tiny wingless parasitic insects that live off human hair. Head lice is very common among children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old. The head louse feeds off small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp.
Head lice are more of a nuisance than a threat to kids. While they don’t spread disease, continuous scratching may lead to infection. It is important to be aware of the symptoms because lice are highly contagious.
Head lice are small, but are visible to the naked eye. Nits are the lice eggs. Before they hatch, they appear as little yellowish brown dots. Lice generally lay nits on hair shafts close to the scalp because it is warmer there. After being laid, nits take between 1 to 2 weeks to hatch.

Head lice are so small and require so few bugs to create infestation that it can be difficult to determine whether you or your children have head lice. There are a number of symptoms to look for. The sooner you notice a symptom the quicker you can get to treat the lice if you do in fact have lice.
One of the first symptoms that are apparent with hair lice is constant itching and scratching of the head. The itching is due to an allergic reaction to the bites from the nits and lice. If you notice that you or your children are scratching their head more often than usual, you want to look closely for lice.
You can diagnose hair lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for lice, nymphs or nits with a magnifying lamp.
Another symptom of hair lice is if your head becomes sore from scratching. You have to be careful because the bites can become infected.
